From an early age, we have been taught about cleaning our teeth and the importance of oral health. Most adults try to follow the rules of proper brushing and flossing to assist with keeping tooth decay under control. However, many don’t understand the importance of healthy gums and how they can greatly impact not only your oral health, but your overall health as well. SInce February is Gum Disease Awareness month, we wanted to discuss how important gum health truly is.
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is a serious gum infection, accompanied by inflammation, caused by bacterial growth along the gumline and around the base of the tooth. Studies have found that over half of adults in the US suffer from some form of gum disease, or periodontitis, making it a common problem. Although many adults have some form of gum infection, oftentimes it remains undetected until it is too late. When left untreated, gum disease can lead to infection in the gum tissue, ultimately followed by damage to the jaw bone. Maintaining regular dental hygiene visits and examinations is important in detecting gum disease. If you are between appointments, there are some warning signs that you can keep an eye out for:
- Gums that bleed easily when brushing
- Continuous bad breath
- Swollen or puffy looking gums
- A receding gum line
What Can Be Done If I Have Gum Disease?
At Dentistry by Angela Britt, we believe gum health should be achieved in the least invasive method. We don’t believe in doing unnecessary procedures and will use various methods to achieve the desired results. Two of the most popular treatment options in dealing with gum disease are scaling and root planing. Scaling is a deep cleaning method used to remove plaque buildup below the gumline. Root planing is another deep cleaning method that goes deeper and cleans the buildup at the root of the tooth that could be affecting the bone. These treatment options are performed on a case-by-case basis, followed by adjunctive therapy as needed.
Another non-invasive method we offer to combat gum disease is the use of Perio Protect Trays. This effective method uses patented trays to deliver treatment deep into the gum pockets where brushing, flossing, and mouthwash fail to reach. These customized trays help extend treatment from the office into your home, allowing you to use this method on your own time. This comfortable, FDA approved treatment helps to eliminate the need for a more involved, uncomfortable procedure.
