Many people have heard of Botox® before and know that it has something to do with removing fine lines and wrinkles. However, many people don’t know what Botox® actually is. Botox® works by blocking nerve signals that control muscle movement, which makes them unable to contract, temporarily softening the skin that was injected. In other words, when using Botox®, you are temporarily paralyzing the muscles to get the desired look.
The cosmetic benefits of Botox® are already established, but dental Botox® uses are starting to gain momentum. Dentists are experts in the muscle and bone architecture of the face. This training and background equips them with the ability to provide precise and natural-looking results. To properly correct lip lines, puckered chins, and upside down or gummy smiles, it’s important that only the right facial muscles are treated. Failure to do so can result in frozen, strange, or awkward results.
Traditionally, we hear of Botox® being used in the upper face to help with reducing crow’s feet around the eyes, vertical frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal “worry lines” on the forehead, and lifting or sometimes arching the eyebrows. Botox® can also be used on the lower face to make dramatic changes to a patient’s smile. Injection of specific lower-lip muscles can reverse downturned lines at the corners of your mouth and reduce the appearance of a resting frown. Using small targeted injections can result in a smoother, softer, and more youthful lip and smile. The appearance of a gummy smile can also be minimized or eliminated using targeted treatment.
