Are you or a loved one planning a pregnancy or currently expecting, or did you recently have a baby? This is such an exciting time for the parents-to-be. Many of our patients are surprised to learn that pregnancy not only changes the state and appearance of your body, but it can also have some lasting effects on your dental health as well. We wanted to share some important information should you or a loved one be experiencing this special time.
Dental Care Before Pregnancy
While we know that not everyone plans their pregnancies, if you are considering becoming pregnant in the near future, we would recommend scheduling a routine hygiene examination before conceiving. It is not recommended to perform certain dental treatments during pregnancy, so we like to check for any problems and schedule treatment as needed. Pregnancy can also change the state of your oral health, and if a problem develops during pregnancy, we will have an idea of what changed based on your dental records.
Dental Care During Pregnancy
There is no need to postpone routine dental care during pregnancy. If you experience severe morning sickness and are vomiting frequently, be sure to tell our office so we can check your teeth for signs of damage to the tooth enamel. Be sure to thoroughly brush and floss regularly.
Dental Care After Pregnancy
Dealing with a different routine after having a newborn can take some getting used to. It can be difficult for a new mom to get a handle on a routine and find time for herself. We want to stress the importance of properly caring for your mouth and body during this time. Be sure that you are drinking plenty of water, brushing your teeth, and scheduling any needed appointments, such as your next routine oral hygiene examination. If you experienced any oral health issues during your pregnancy, treatment can now be scheduled.
If you are pregnant or thinking of adding to your family in the near future, now is the perfect time to schedule an appointment for a hygiene examination. We look forward to seeing you in our office located in Brunswick, GA soon.
