Do you or someone you know suffer from fibromyalgia or symptoms associated with chronic pain? Fibromyalgia is a condition in which individuals experience all-over muscle pain, fatigue, joint pain and discomfort, as well as many other symptoms. It is not uncommon for someone who suffers from fibromyalgia to also experience symptoms related to TMD or temporomandibular joint disorder. Similar to fibromyalgia, TMD symptoms can also include regular pain and discomfort in the jaw joints, facial muscles and soft facial tissue in the area of the head, face and neck.

The Link Between TMD and Fibromyalgia

Since fibromyalgia can affect the muscles and joints, it is not surprising that some patients who have received a diagnosis also are seeing the symptoms associated with TMD. Both conditions can lead to issues with joints and muscles. As with any condition, each person has different results and symptoms, and many of these symptoms can be associated with other diseases and illnesses providing patients with a misdiagnosis and a treatment plan that is not offering the relief they are desperately seeking. For example, a patient who is experiencing jaw discomfort as well as pain and ringing in the ears may assume they have an ear infection since the symptoms are pointing in that direction when the problem is really TMD.
