We are passionate about our patients visiting our office regularly for routine oral hygiene examinations and cleanings. During these visits, we not only clean the mouth and look for signs of decay and gum disease, but we also check for oral cancer. April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, which is dedicated to helping individuals learn and understand more about this common form of cancer and how it can be prevented. Are you more likely to develop oral cancer? Read on to learn more.
What is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer is quite common and can be found anywhere on the lips, inside the mouth, and even down into the throat. It consists of cancer cells that are found on the lips, tongue, under the tongue, cheeks, tonsils, gums, and oropharynx, which is the back of the throat. It is important to check your lips and mouth for irregularities that can indicate a problem. We see our patients infrequently, so it is important that they are mindful of any changes in their oral health. If you notice any of the following signs, contact us immediately:
- Sore on your lip or in your mouth that doesn’t heal within two weeks
- Rough spots on your tongue or cheeks
- White patches that do not disappear after cleaning your teeth and mouth
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing
- Unexplained bad breath
- Numbness or tenderness inside your mouth, tongue, throat, or neck
Who is at Risk?
As with any medical condition, there are certain patients who are more at risk than others based on their lifestyle choices and family medical history. If you have an immediate relative who has suffered from oral cancer, you are more likely to develop it yourself. Others at risk include people who smoke, vape, or use chewing tobacco products. Patients who visit sunless tanning beds and have prolonged sun exposure are also at risk.
If you notice any of the warning signs mentioned above, it is important to contact us at our office, which is located in Brunswick, GA, to schedule an appointment. Early detection and treatment are the keys to avoiding serious complications. We also encourage you to schedule an appointment for an oral hygiene examination if it has been some time since your last appointment.
