Common Dental Myths Debunked

Britt Blog December 23

There are many misconceptions about dentistry and oral health that we have heard over the years. We want to take a moment and debunk some common myths that can negatively affect your oral health:

Myth #1 You only need to go to the dentist when your teeth hurt

  • Waiting for your teeth to hurt means you waited too long to visit the dentist. We encourage our patients to schedule routine oral hygiene examination appointments as recommended. Most patients should visit every four to six months. If you are experiencing discomfort in your teeth, and it has been some time since your last visit, there is a good chance you are experiencing dental decay or other problems with your oral health.

Myth #2 Braces are for when you are young

  • There is never a wrong time to straighten your teeth. Patients of all ages can benefit from orthodontic treatment. We are happy to provide Invisalign® to our adult patients. This orthodontic treatment uses clear aligner trays to slowly straighten teeth. Patients love all the benefits, such as removable trays.

Myth #3 If flossing causes your teeth to bleed, stop flossing

  • Flossing is necessary and an important step to ensure any lingering food and bacteria are removed from between teeth. If you notice that your gums are bleeding when you floss, it can mean a few different things. One possibility is that you are flossing incorrectly and causing trauma to your gums. The other possibility is that you may be experiencing symptoms of gum disease and need to visit our office to check your gums.

Myth #4 Brushing harder will get your teeth cleaner

  • There is no need to brush your teeth hard. Brushing hard will only lead to problems with your teeth. It will not get your teeth cleaner. Using too much pressure or vigorous strokes can damage the enamel of your teeth, leading to tooth sensitivity or cracked teeth. Be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle strokes when brushing.
