When you visit our office for a routine hygiene examination and cleaning, we know that your number one concern is if there is any decay or disease that would cause you to need treatment. If you properly clean and care for your teeth throughout the year you should be in good shape to avoid dental issues. However, there is something that can easily build up on your teeth and along the gumline that can lead to issues with your oral health – it is plaque.
What is Plaque?
Plaque is the buildup of bacteria that remains on the teeth, between the teeth, along the gumline, and even under the gumline. It creates a coating on your teeth that feels sticky or fuzzy, in the morning when you first wake before brushing your teeth or if you do not clean your teeth properly. Plaque is the leading cause of tooth decay and gum disease.
What Causes Plaque?
Plaque acts like glue and loves to stick to your teeth, providing an excellent breeding ground for more bacteria. It can be caused by:
- Diet high in sugary and starchy foods
- Smoking and using tobacco products
- Poor oral hygiene habits
- Dry mouth
How to Prevent Plaque?
The best way to keep plaque away is to maintain an oral hygiene routine that includes brushing for two minutes twice daily and flossing each day as well. We know that many patients don’t use dental floss as often as they should. Even if you do an excellent job of brushing, there is always food that remains trapped between your teeth. Dental floss is necessary to help remove lingering food and bacteria from between your teeth and along the gumline. Other ways to help prevent the buildup of plaque is to drink plenty of water and chew sugarless gum after eating.
