Is Stress Negatively Affecting Your Oral Health?

Blog Feb 23

Many of us lead busy lives. It always seems like there is something to do, whether it’s something work related, an event with family, or a social outing with friends. It is not uncommon to experience moments of stress when you have a full schedule. It can feel like there is not enough time in the day, and accomplishing your to-do list can be stressful. It is a known fact that added stress can wreak havoc on the body and lead to issues with your heart and other areas of your overall health. Many patients are surprised to learn that added stress can also impact their oral health.

Two Oral Conditions Caused by Stress

During your routine hygiene examination, we are often able to detect your stress level based on what we find in your mouth. These are some ways stress can negatively affect your oral health:

Increased Risk for Gum Disease
When you are under intense stress, it can deplete your immune system. Harmful bacteria in your mouth look for any opportunity to cause trouble. When your immune system is not working as it should, harmful bacteria in your mouth can lead to an infection in your gums known as gingivitis, the beginning stage of gum disease.

Teeth Grinding
One of the most common ways stress comes out in your mouth is through teeth grinding. This is when you place added stress on your teeth. When your rear molars have severe or uneven wear, it is a sign you are grinding your teeth. Many patients are unaware that they grind their teeth, as it commonly occurs during sleep. Teeth grinding, if left untreated, can cause serious problems, such as worn enamel, tooth sensitivity, and cracked and broken teeth.
