Life is busy. It always seems that something is being added to the schedule, whether it is a work obligation, a family event, or an outing with friends. It can be easy to postpone appointments, such as a routine hygiene examination, especially if you are not experiencing discomfort. We want to encourage our patients to remain proactive with your oral health. Unfortunately, once you experience dental decay or a dental emergency, waiting is no longer an option.
Being Proactive Vs. Reactive
Every dentist, including us at Dentistry By Angela Britt, stresses the importance of routine oral hygiene examinations. Not only does it give our team an opportunity to thoroughly clean your teeth, but it also allows us to inspect your teeth and gums for areas that are damaged or are showing warning signs of potential damage. Monitoring an area of the mouth that shows potential for decay or gum disease allows our team to recommend treatment as soon as necessary. When treatment is delayed or postponed, a simple problem that could be remedied easily with a minor treatment can turn into a problem that can cause discomfort and require lengthier and more extensive treatments. For example, we may see a tooth that has the potential to develop decay and need a filling. If this tooth is not monitored regularly, the decay can fully develop, and then the time for a filling may pass and a dental crown will be needed.
Ways to be Proactive with Your Oral Health
Aside from routine hygiene examinations, there are other measures that can be taken to ensure that you have optimal oral health. Be sure to develop an oral hygiene routine that guarantees your teeth are being cleaned properly. This includes brushing thoroughly twice a day as well as using dental floss daily. We also recommend being sure to eat at mealtimes, limiting snacking throughout the day. Lingering food on the teeth can lead to decay. It is also important to be sure you are drinking plenty of water, especially at mealtimes.
